Makeup Tutorial for Beginners

After my last makeup tutorial went live, I received a lot of feedback asking for a makeup tutorial for beginners. Ask and ye’ shall receive!

This tutorial covers how to use one palette, the Naked 3, to achieve a really easy and wearable look for all occasions. This look is definitely a “go to” for me. If I can’t get away with just mascara, then you can place bets that this is the look I’m going for. You can use ANY colors with this look… just make sure to keep the darker colors to the outer parts of the eye. I tried my best to cover detailed application of the entire face but if you guys would prefer that I broke down exactly how to apply, for example, blush, let me know. I am down for creating as many videos as you need/want. The products I used are listed below. Also, if you own any palettes that you would like to see in future makeup tutorials for beginners, let me know in the comments.

Finally, my subscription button on my blog was broken. If you subscribed to my blog in the first few days that I was up and running, please subscribe again to ensure that you get notified of my new postings. If you haven’t subscribed yet… umm.. what? Get on it! xo

Bridal Beauty: Wedding Ready Skin

Wedding season is around the corner!

One of my lovely friends from graduate school, Tara, is getting married! While the wedding isn’t for a few more months, Tara was wondering if I had tips on how to make sure she has perfect and glowing skin for her wedding day. Boy, do I!

When I got engaged I immediately began google-ing how to get perfect skin for my big day. However, I was met with disappointment. Nothing posted on the interwebs was what I was looking for. I already knew that I needed to have a good cleanser and that I needed to use an eye cream… I needed something more concrete, more specific, and more helpful. More, More, More! So let’s do this! Let’s talk about how to get AMAZING skin for you big day…or, well, any day! What you will read below is my current skincare routine — once you pamper your skin like this, you won’t ever want to go back to just apricot scrubs and lotion. Yuck.

Psssst….this is a LONG but SUPER informative post. You’ve been warned.

Okay, before you do anything, I hope that you’re already regularly working out (hot yoga does wonders for my skin), drinking TONS of water (seriously, drink more), and sleeping 7-8 hours every night (I sleep nine he he). All of the products in the world won’t fix poor health habits. Try to give up caffeine least as you get closer to your event (also- give up sugar, salt, and refined starches too…). I’m not kidding.

4-6 Months Before Your Big Day- Adopt a GREAT Skincare Routine

Your first stop should be to a reputable esthetician for a facial and skin consultation. I went to Aretha at Bliss Spa in

My favorite spa in Chicago

My favorite spa in Chicago

Chicago. As I mentioned before, I had most of the basics down so Aretha helped me step up my game. She told me that I wasn’t exfoliating enough and that’s why my skin was looking a little textured and dull. FYI – I have dehydrated skin that is prone to redness. While I have never struggled with acne, around the age of 26, my skin started not to look as smooth as it previously had. My pores were more visible and around my chin just looked….textured. I can’t think of another way to describe it. Anyway, Aretha said this was because I wasn’t using a chemical exfoliator in my daily routine. More info on that below.

After seeing Aretha I started the following skincare routine both morning and night:

1. In the morning I use a cleansing balm (see my post here about my favorite ones) to wash my face. Cleansing balms are meant to be applied directly to dry skin, massaged in, and then wiped away with a warm, damp cloth. If a cleansing balm isn’t for you then try a cleansing oil or a cleansing milk. DO NOT USE ANY FOAMING CLEANSERS. Throw them out. They dry your skin out and are only appropriate for teenagers…though when I have kids, no foaming cleansers in the house. Bad habit.

At night, I cleanse my face twice. Once to take off  of my makeup and the second time to actually clean my skin. You can use two different cleansers if you want but I use the same cleansing balm for both cleanses. I’m lazy. That’s why. Adding the double cleanse has been a recent change in my skincare routine but a welcome one – I won’t ever go back to a single cleanse. The results speak for themselves.

POPSUGAR Must Have Unboxing – Feb 2015

Hi guys!

If you’re not familiar with subscription boxes then let me tell you…. you’re missing out! Subscription boxes make every month feel like Christmas. Basically, you sign up and pay a monthly fee for a company to send you a box of goodies. The boxes come in all varieties and prices so there is a box to fit everyone’s interests and budgets. The ones I love all have to do with beauty and/or health. Currently, I subscribe to POPSUGAR Must Have (monthly), Ipsy Bag (monthly) and Fab Fit Fun (quarterly).

I have made a video that shows the contents of my latest POPSUGAR box. I received this one this past Wednesday and I really loved the Valentine’s/Love theme. POPSUGAR is $39.95 per month but each box has over $150 worth of products. Check out the video to see what fun goodies I received this month. Trust me, it’s well worth the moola. OH — you do not need a long term subscription for POPSUGAR. I bought the 6 month subscription and will evaluate when that is over.

A little tip: if you receive something in your box that you know you won’t use, save it for a future hostess or birthday gift. I have a whole box of goodies in my closet so I will never be in the awkward position to have forgotten to get someone a gift.

If you want to try POPSUGAR click here:
PROMO: Enter code MUSTHAVE5 for $5 off you first box
What subscriptions do you do? Am I missing out of any good ones? Would you like to see future unboxings? Let me know your thoughts. xo

Quick & Easy Makeup Look

Hey again!

Do you remember high school dances and the pressure surrounding them? The hair. The dress. The MAKEUP! The makeup always stressed me out because my mom taught me nothing about makeup– because she really couldn’t. She is a natural beauty and literally just wears mascara and looks so beautiful. JEALOUS! Back in high school and college, I basically only wore pink and gold eyeshadow with some heavy black eyeliner and called it a day. As I got older… yeah. That look didn’t fly anymore and I had to learn how to apply makeup correctly… or mostly correctly. In my quest to not look like Mimi from the Drew Carey Show, I spent HOURS watching YouTube videos of girls doing their makeup. I did this for probably two summers before I thought, “Yeah, I’m ready to pass on this knowledge to others.” I posted a video on YouTube last year. I didn’t tell anyone because I was all sorts of nervous but I thought now would be a great time to share it since so many people have been asking for makeup tips.

This video is only about 11 minutes long and I go over how to do a gold and cranberry smoky eye, foundation, contouring, eyebrows… the whole shabang! I think this is a great and quick, easy makeup look for just about any occasion. It is also a great way to incorporate color into your makeup without feeling like a clown. If you recreate the look make sure to tag me in your photos on instagram or use the hashtag #whispersweetsomethings.

FYI — hit play on the video and then click on the button that says “YouTube” icon on the bottom right of the video. This will enable you to see the full product list in the description bar below the video. Be sure to subscribe 🙂 xo

Four Face Masks You Needed Yesterday

Hi hi!

Either you’re a bath person or you’re not. I AM…big big big time. A lot. MJ and I used to live in a condo downtown and we had a HUGGGGGGGEEEE bath tub. I basically lived in that thing. No lie. However, when we were designing our new house, the upstairs floor plan just didn’t have the room for a giant tub so I made a little sacrifice and decided to have our master bathroom just have a large shower. I wouldn’t say I regret the choice, because there wasn’t really another viable option, but I just really miss having a huge bath tub. Ugh. Anyway, I digress. We DO have a bath in our guest bathroom. It’s nothing big but it works. So, several times a week, I still take a really long bubble bath. My knees poke out of the water but whatever. During this bath, I spend quite a bit of time pampering my skin. I fill the tub with my favorite bubbles from Honest Company, prop up my phone on my toilet so I can watch a bunch of YouTube videos and I just pamper myself. It is SO relaxing. I highly recommend this as a part of your routine. Taking 15-20 minutes for yourself is important. Your husband and your kids will understand. If you have kids, you might want to wear ear plugs….crying kids totally ruin the mood.

Four Face Masks You Needed Yesterday

As I mention, bath time is as a time where I use special masks and treatments on my skin. I will wash my face with my favorite cleanser and then follow with a sheet mask, peel off mask, or clay mask. Depends on my mood and my skin. I’ve listed some of my favorites below. Each description has a link to a site where you can purchase the product if you’re interested. Disclaimer: I have dehydrated skin, I am not prone to acne, and I do not have sensitive skin. Pick the masks that will work best for your skin. I tend to pick masks based on added hydration and wrinkle prevention. You do you.

Four Face Masks You Needed Yesterday

  1. Eve Lom Rescue Mask

This mask kinda smells like Noxema and I love that! Reminds me of my youth…a simpler skin care time. Eve Lom has some great products. The Rescue Mask is a clay mask that you lightly scrub off when it is dry. I tend to rub it off with my hands and then go back in with a wet cloth. Again, you do you. This is a great mask for pulling out impurities like black heads and stuffed up pores. I love it because it doesn’t dry out my skin. Yay! According to the Eve Lom website, it also soothes redness and make your skin smooth and supple. I agree with both of those statements. It is super pricey, but it lasts forever, especially if you have a few masks you can rotate. I’ve had mine for months now and it hasn’t dried out in the jar like the Glam Glow ones did. ***shakes fist in the air at Glam Glow**

Recommended use: When your skin is feeling clogged up and gunky..think, after a day of touring a new city or after a baby has thrown up on your all day.
